The complex, urgent challenges facing Niassa Wilderness require cooperation and collaboration beyond geographical boundaries. We co-founded an alliance to better protect and manage the vast lands and inhabitants of our region. By sharing knowledge and expertise in an evolving ecosystem framework, we can accelerate the rate of innovative solutions, increase multi-sector support, collaborate on case study impact assessments, and foster more public awareness worldwide. We will build upon our shared vision to protect the region’s endangered wildlife, cultural heritage, and pristine wilderness. To tackle the catastrophic wildlife crimes occurring on our lands, we need to build efficiency and capacity of on-the-ground services to protect the wildlife. We seek to sustain local community livelihoods, cultures, and development. Further, we strive to ensure well-managed and sustainably funded wilderness areas for future generations.
Niassa Wilderness works in partnership with the Niassa Reserve (WCS and ANAC) and other local operators under the Niassa Conservation Alliance (NCA). The NCA consists of two other founding members besides our Niassa Wilderness (Block L7): Chuilexi Conservancy (Blocks L5 North, L6, and R6) and Mariri Investimentos (Blocks L5 South and L4 East). In collaboration, our concessions comprise 11.918 km2 (or 28.3%) of the entire Niassa Reserve.
Founded in 2016, the NCA is committed to the protection and conservation of eastern Niassa National Reserve through collaboration, investment, and excellence in conservation and community engagement for future generations. Recognizing the strength of our shared resources, expertise, and methodology, our specific objectives are to:
- Ensure effective wildlife conservation.
- Harness community and political support.
- Combine knowledge and resources for combating the multiple and escalating threats.
- Establish viable and profitable tourism opportunities.
- Expand membership of the Reserve.
To promote coexistence between lions and other carnivores and people in Niassa National Reserve though directly mitigating threats and directly involving communities in conservation management. Mariri Investimentos acknowledge the costs to communities who live with large carnivores while recognizing the potential for lions to provide ecological, economic and cultural benefits to the Niassa National Reserve and Mozambique.
Working in partnership with Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and in liaison with the Reserve management authority Chuilexi have secured three concessions within the wider reserve that now make up the newly formed Chuilexi Conservancy. At 5,868 km² these contiguous concessions represent 14% of Niassa Reserve and host the greatest densities of wildlife.
